Catholic Cambodia
Phnom Penh (Agenzia Fides) - The Catholic faithful of Phnom Penh are gathering in the Church of Saints Peter and Paul in the Cambodian capital for prayer and Eucharistic adoration in the style of the Taizé community, to express their closeness to Pope Francis in the difficult period of his illness. Since yesterday, February 24, the church's doors have been open to anyone who wants to join: there are also Buddhists and people of other faiths who, out of respect and admiration for the Pope, remain in silence and meditation and join the assembly in prayer.
The Taizé prayer is characterized by a balance of songs, a reading of the Bible, prayer and silence, and is a form of prayer that has proven particularly suitable for communities from oriental cultures.
The Apostolic Vicar of Phnom Penh, Bishop Olivier Schmitthaeusler, tells Fides that "the small Catholic community in Cambodia wants to show the Holy Father as much closeness and affection as possible at this time". And addressing the Pope directly, he adds: "The Catholic community in Cambodia is united with you in prayer and hope. We are grateful for your spiritual guidance, which is an inspiration and strength for all of us. We entrust you to the divine mercy and the protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary". He also speaks on behalf of Msgr. Enrique Figaredo and Pierre Soun Hangly, the other two Apostolic Vicars in Cambodia, as well as all the priests, religious and faithful of the local Church.
