Jakarta (Fides Agency) - The news of Pope Francis' death has caused deep emotion among Indonesian Catholics, who remember him with affection and gratitude for his pastoral commitment and his visit to the country in September 2024.
In many churches across the country, the faithful are attending Holy Masses and prayer vigils, remembering the Pontiff for his closeness to the poor and marginalized and as a tireless promoter of interreligious dialogue.
These sentiments were also expressed by Cardinal Ignatius Suharyo, Archbishop of Jakarta, who, recalling last year's Apostolic Journey, reiterated that the Pope's presence in Indonesia “confirmed the vitality of the Catholic Church in Indonesia by promoting interreligious dialogue in a Muslim-majority country.”
Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto also expressed his condolences, emphasizing that the Pope was “a man deeply devoted to humanity, peace, and fraternity,” and recalled the significant impact of his visit to Indonesia, which touched not only Catholics but the entire nation, leaving an indelible mark throughout the country.
