Lahore (Fides Agency) - “Pope Francis has always been a vibrant voice of peace, brotherhood, and unity,” said Muslim and Christian leaders during a special prayer meeting organized on April 22 by Father Asif Sardar, Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Lahore. Upon hearing of Pope Francis' death, churches in Pakistan filled with faithful who began praying incessantly. Messages of condolence poured in for bishops, priests, religious, and ordinary faithful. Muslim leaders, imams, and civil authorities expressed their feelings of affection, also simple Muslim believers wanted to show their Christian neighbors solidarity and closeness for the loss of a Shepherd who left an imprint on everyone's hearts.
Muslim leaders in Pakistan paid tribute the Pope by remembering him with gratitude as an apostle of dialogue between religions, a way to build peaceful relations and defuse hatred and intolerance.
The Document on Human Fraternity for World Peace and Living Together, also known as the “Abu Dhabi Declaration,” signed on February 4, 2019, by Pope Francis and the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, will remain a milestone in relations with Islam, they said. That text remains “a powerful call to rediscover ourselves as brothers and sisters in order to promote justice and peace together, guaranteeing human rights and religious freedom,” the Pakistani religious leaders recalled, “and represents a legacy that we will always carry in our hearts.”
